Just wondering how many of you remember the following things-
1. Raleigh coupons from cigarettes (my parents had tons of them- they smoked like
chimneys!) You could save them and trade them for merchandise.
2. Green stamps- same theory only you got them when you purchased groceries.
3. Saddle oxfords (black and white)
4. Culots - now called capris, I believe.
5. Maxi dresses- very hippy looking long dresses that were much desired by me- the
only one I ever owned was a hand-me-down from my cousin , Christy.
6. McDonald's serving only hamburgers, cheeseburgers and fish filets as their
sandwich offerings.
7. Sunday night TV- Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom followed by The Wonderful World
of Disney.
8. A weird dessert that I know my siblings (the older 2) will remember called "Whip
and Chill." It somehow formed 2 layers of a pudding-like substance that we ate
with glee and loved!
9. Incredible Edibles --a very gross idea but aforementioned cousin Christy and I
ate many of the rubber candy-like items. I am sure they were full of everything
bad--I can still smell the burning smell produced by the little metal cooker.
10. Easy Bake oven- ORIGINAL. Ate many a pan of raw cake batter- why did we think
that a light bulb could actually COOK something??
11. Pudding cooked on the stove only--had to wait for it to cool but could lick the
warm remnants from the pot while waiting. YUM!
12. Chico Sticks- had one a couple of years ago and it didn't taste quite as good as
the ones we walked miles for and ate on the way home.
13. Kiddie Matinees at the local theatre- our parents dropped us off with no
worries- we each got 30 cents for snacks-- this would buy a beverage and either
a popcorn or a candy.(My usual choice was Junior Mints )
14. Popcorn cooked on the stove in a pot OR Jiffy-Pop. (the magic treat- as much fun
to make as it is to eat! ) That has lost it's flavor like the Chico sticks.
15. Small record players with a stack of 45's next to it- mine was red and white
checkered and was my companion on many a night.
16. Falls and wigs being the rage in the 60's- all girls wanted one!
17. Love beads- stringing them while watching the Friday night line-up of Brady
Bunch and Partridge Family- Sat nights began with Hee Haw (hey, I am from the
South!) and went on to the Bob Newhart Show (original) followed by the Carol
Burnett Show - still some of the funniest TV I have ever seen in my life.
18. The King Family- they must've had 1000 family members and sang in TV specials-
loved them like I loved The Lennon Sisters. (I spent many a SAt night with my
great-grandmother watching The Lawrence Welk Show- what can I say?? I still get
choked up when I see it come on and those bubbles start to fly! )
OK- that's enough for tonight- feel free to add your own nostalgia!!!
